Here is a draft for a Table Etiquette / Code of Conduct document.
Since this is for a central hub, this document serves as the "Constitution" for all your games. I have kept the tone "Firm but Friendly." It establishes boundaries without sounding like a wet blanket.
Note: Anything in [Brackets] is a placeholder for you to customize based on your specific preferences.
The Social Contract: Table Etiquette & Expectations
"The Goal is for everyone to have fun."
D&D is a collaborative game. We are telling a story together. To make sure that story is enjoyable for everyone at the table (including the DM), these are the ground rules we agree to abide by.
1. Respect & Safety
Zero Tolerance: Hate speech, harassment, or bullying of any kind (in-character or out-of-character) will not be tolerated.
Lines & Veils: We will use
[Insert Safety Tool, e.g., Lines & Veils / The X-Card]. If a topic makes you uncomfortable, say so. No questions asked, we will fade to black or move on.Player vs. Character: Conflict between characters can be dramatic and fun; conflict between players is not. Ensure your in-game arguments don't bleed into real life.
2. The "Cooperative" Rule
Make an Adventurer: Your character must be willing to adventure and willing to work with a team. "Lone Wolves" who refuse to participate or characters who actively sabotage the party are not allowed.
No "Main Character" Syndrome: Share the spotlight. Give other players a chance to talk, plan, and be cool.
The "It's What My Character Would Do" Clause: This is never a valid excuse to be a jerk to other players or ruin the fun. If "what your character would do" ruins the game, make a new character.
3. Logistics & Attendance
The
[24]Hour Rule: If you cannot make a session, please let me know at least[24]hours in advance so I can prep accordingly.Start Time: We start rolling dice at
[Time]. Please arrive[15]minutes early to get snacks, settle in, and chat. The Quorum: If we are missing
[1]player, we will play the session and someone will pilot your character (combat only). If we are missing[2]or more, we will cancel or play a board game.
4. Table Manners (Digital & Analog)
Phone Policy: Please keep phone use to a minimum. Checking a spell or text is fine; scrolling TikTok during combat is not.
Metagaming: Try to keep player knowledge separate from character knowledge. If you've read the monster manual, please pretend you haven't.
Rules Lawyering: I am open to being corrected on a rule, but if I make a final ruling to keep the pacing moving, we will move on and discuss it after the session.
5. Food & Drink
Snacks:
[e.g., We usually do a potluck style / Bring your own snacks].Alcohol/Substances:
[e.g., Social drinking is fine, but please don't get smashed. We need you coherent enough to do math.]
By joining a campaign in this archive, you agree to these guidelines.
A few things you might want to customize:
The "Quorum": How many players need to be missing before you cancel? (Usually, for a group of 5, playing with 3 or 4 is fine).
Safety Tools: If you haven't looked into "Lines and Veils" or the "X-Card," I highly recommend adding a link to an explanation of those in this document.
Would you like me to create a "Session 0 Checklist" for you to use when starting a new campaign, to ensure you cover all these points in person?
